DESCRIPTION:Talk: Sami Band Weaving and Culture with Susan Foulkes \nSusan Foulkes\, The Durham Weaver\, will give a talk about Sami Band weaving and culture based on a visit to Jokkmokk in Feb 2020 and the Sami winter market which has been held for 400 years and was where the Sami people could trade goods with merchants. \nJokkmokk is a small town in Swedish Lapland. DESCRIPTION:Sami Band Weaving with 9 Pattern Threads with Susan Foulkes \nThis workshop will introduce patterned band weaving using traditional Sámi patterns. Susan will bring samples along for display.  All patterns in the workshop booklet are traditional Sámi patterns.  \nSusan will demonstrate backstrap weaving with a standard heddle and a Sunna 9 pattern slot heddle.   During the workshop the following points will be covered:  \n\nHow to start weaving. \nHow to read a pattern chart for the inkle loom\, standard heddle and Sunna heddle. \nHow to keep an even tension both in width and length. \nHow to change a weft \nHow to recognise and correct a weaving error. \nHow to finish a piece of weaving so that it does not unravel. \n\nThese skills will give you the basics to continue weaving at home.  Practice is the key.

DESCRIPTION:Talk: Textiles and Clothing in London 1150-1450 with Frances Pritchard  \nAmong the most evocative items to be discovered by archaeologists are the scraps of silk and wool and other fabrics that signal so eloquently their owner’s status and concerns. Such clothing and textile finds have figured prominently in excavations of medieval sites in London; they have included knitting\, tapestries\, silk hair-nets and elaborately patterned oriental\, Islamic and Italian fabrics\, which reveal for the first time the wide range of cloths available to medieval Londoners; there are beautifully made buttons\, and buttonholes and edgings which display superb craftsmanship and a high level of needlework skills; the way that clothes were cut and sewn can be studied in detail. This account should be of wide general interest; dress historians and archaeologists will also find a wealth of new insights into the fashions\, clothing and textile industries of medieval England and Europe. \nFrances Pritchard is Curator (Textiles) at the Whitworth Art Gallery\, University of Manchester. \nPlus all the usuals – Show & Tell\, Sales Table\, and afternoon cake.

DESCRIPTION:Talk: Krokbragd with Angie Parker \nKrokbragd is a Norwegian weaving technique that Angie specializes in.\nAngie is a weaver\, designer and colourist based in Bristol. After being taught rug weaving at art college in the 1990’s\, she pursued a career in costume for a number of years whilst continuing to weave on small scale collections. During this time she developed the original style for which she has become known since setting up her business. \nWith a stack of handwoven krokbragd samples and slides Angie will talk you through the processes of her weaving and design and she will explain the technical intricacies of the technique she has been addicted to for over thirty years. \nShe will be talking about the ups and downs of setting up in business around a young family in a challenging marketplace. She’ll also cover pushing out of your comfort zone and colour confidence\, though uplifting colourful woven textiles. There will be a slide show and samples of Angie’s trademark woven textiles on display\, plus a Q&A session at the end.

DESCRIPTION:Have-a-Go Day: Weaving Textures with a Rigid Heddle Loom \nUnfortunately\, our scheduled talk by Claire Shovelton from Studio EVIG natural dye company has been postponed to a later date. \n\nFortunately\, Guild member Angela has stepped in to run a have-a-go day for us!  Angela will bring in five looms for us to experiment on with warp and weft manipulation to produce textures such as Brookes Bouquet and Leno.  You can also bring in your own loom to experiment on – please have a balanced warp on the loom in any colour combination. \n\nThe Guild’s four-shaft loom will also be available and setup for Krokbragd. \n\n\nAlso\, don’t forget the Sales Table\, Show and Tell\, and afternoon tea and cake!
