SUMMARY:September Workshops & Farm Visit 2022
DESCRIPTION:Diana has very kindly offered to host another wonderful Guild visit to her farm for OGWSD members. \nWe have two mini workshops on offer\, or bring your own project to work on. \nPlease bring your own chair\, lunch\, and whatever you need for the weather (sun hat\, jumper…!)  There is shelter under cover if it is wet.  There will be some refreshments but cake donations will be gratefully received. \nTry tie and dye with indigo and/or natural dyes and/or bring your crafting. \nTie and dye in an indigo vat with Angela Pawlyn\nAngela hopes to cover some methods of tying the cloth before dyeing\, using some cold water reactive dyes\, retying the cloth and then redyeing in the indigo vat. \nTo have a go at this activity you will need to bring: \n\none or two pieces of dry white cotton cloth no more than 15×15 inches (the cloth gets wetted after it has been tied)\ncotton thread\na needle\nsmall stones or marbles (there will be some objects to tie in\, too)\nif you want to have a go with yarn you could bring a couple of small skeins of natural yarns such as silk\, which you have wetted\, e.g. with warm water and a drop of detergent (indigo works well on all natural fibres)\nrubber gloves/aprons to protect your clothes and hands from the dye\nplastic bags to take your dyed items home\n\nIf you have any old washing up bowls or buckets\, please bring some along. \nNatural dyeing with Carole Thorpe and Amanda Henriques\nCarole and Amanda will run natural dyeing techniques on wool\, for which you will need to bring: \n\nskeins of wool no heavier than 15gms which you have wetted out ahead of time\neach skein should be marked in such a way that you recognise it as your own – don’t use initials as there are duplications!  (tip: tyvec wrist bands are useful when dyeing as they don’t deteriorate in water and you can still read them months later when you’ve forgotten what the dye was and what the fibre is!)\nrubber gloves and apron\nnotebook/pencil for making notes if you want to\nplastic carrier bags to take your dyed items home\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Have-a-Go Day: Tapestry Weaving with Amanda Henriques \n \nAmanda will bring ready warped up frames for you to use. The warps will be fairly narrow but long\, so that each one could be used by two people\, (in turn!).\nThere will be capacity for about 20 people to have a go\, in 2 sessions\, and the possibility of taking the frame home to finish the piece if you’d like to.\nAmanda will bring some yarn suitable for weft\, in various colours. \nWhat you could bring: \nSome yarn for weft. This does not have to be wool. Almost anything can be used. The warps will be set at 8 epi so it needs to be very roughly DK or Aran weight\, but lighter yarns could be doubled up. Commercial knitting yarns are not ideal as they tend to be rather soft; handspuns are better. \nBring an old dinner fork if you have one\, for beating the weft down. Amanda will have a few. \nDo bring your own tapestry frame if you wish to. Amanda will bring some cotton warping yarn if you would like help to warp up the frame. \nYou could also bring an idea of what you’d like to weave!  Amanda recommends a simple idea or pattern if this is your first try.

DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Woolen Preparation and Longdraw Spinning with James Perry aka Longdraw James \nJames will cover the basis of a woollen yarn and will discuss differences between these and worsted yarns. He will then discuss carding technique before discussing the longdraw spinning technique itself. We will spin from rolags and a couple of other preparations and fibres before looking into plying\, discussing how much Ply twist is enough. Finally we will look at finishing woollen yarns. \nExperience level needed: ideally attendees need to be able to consistently spin and ply. They don’t need to be super experienced or experts\, beginner is fine\, but it need to be able to comfortably spin and ply yarn.

We can take any craft items including equipment but\, and this is a big BUT\, everything must be packaged where needs be\, no loose balls or it gets messy. \nEvery item needs to be clearly labelled with the price and seller’s full name. When you price your items two things come into play: 1. If you don’t want to take it home reasonably price it; and 2. The guild\, as usual\, takes 12% commission. \nNo Show & Tell table this time\, just the usual afternoon cup of tea and cake.

DESCRIPTION:Talk: Sami Band Weaving and Culture with Susan Foulkes \nSusan Foulkes\, The Durham Weaver\, will give a talk about Sami Band weaving and culture based on a visit to Jokkmokk in Feb 2020 and the Sami winter market which has been held for 400 years and was where the Sami people could trade goods with merchants. \nJokkmokk is a small town in Swedish Lapland. It’s known for the centuries-old Jokkmokk Winter Market\, an annual event that draws thousands for handicrafts made by the indigenous Sami people. \nAlso\, the Show & Tell table\, Sales Table\, and afternoon cake.

DESCRIPTION:Sami Band Weaving with 9 Pattern Threads with Susan Foulkes \nThis workshop will introduce patterned band weaving using traditional Sámi patterns. Susan will bring samples along for display.  All patterns in the workshop booklet are traditional Sámi patterns.  \nSusan will demonstrate backstrap weaving with a standard heddle and a Sunna 9 pattern slot heddle.   During the workshop the following points will be covered:  \n\nHow to start weaving. \nHow to read a pattern chart for the inkle loom\, standard heddle and Sunna heddle. \nHow to keep an even tension both in width and length. \nHow to change a weft \nHow to recognise and correct a weaving error. \nHow to finish a piece of weaving so that it does not unravel. \n\nThese skills will give you the basics to continue weaving at home.  Practice is the key.
