SUMMARY:September Meeting 2018
DESCRIPTION:Textiles Tell Stories: a talk by Claire Blackburn \nClaire\, a Guild member and professional textile artist\, will give a short talk about her work and practice\, with particular reference to her use of textiles to record stories and narratives. We will take a look at some of the projects she has been involved with and the relevant skills and materials used\, which include knitting\, needle-felting\, hand-dyeing\, embroidery\, photography and stitch. There will be a range of samples\, images and work for the audience to explore and talk about. \nClaire is an award-winning member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. Her work has been selected for exhibitions at the Houses of Parliament and the Mall Galleries in London\, among many others. She also undertakes arts and crafts educational work to inspire passion for ‘making’ in young people. Claire says of her practice: ‘I am by nature an anthropologist with a deep interest in people and the diversity of situations and circumstances in which they live. I am interested in researching and recording these everyday lives and stories\, presenting  the findings in a visual and accessible form. The tactile nature of fabric is\, to me\, key to the communication of the story. As people we have a special relationship with fabric\, it can provide very strong visual and emotional associations. I try to tap into these associations in order to draw the viewer into the story. I  use my own research throughout my work\, translating my findings through text\, photographs\, drawing\, stitch and colour. I often accompany my pieces with handmade and digitally printed books.’ \nwww.claireblackburn.com \nwww.socialfabricarts.com

DESCRIPTION:Fleece to finished garment challenge\n\nOur July meeting will take place at Diana Bird’s lovely farm. She has very kindly offered us the opportunity to  enjoy our Guild day there again this year. There will be no meeting at Stanton St John.\n\nWe will be holding a fleece to finish garment challenge. Teams will be randomly chosen on the day. The garment to be created is a scarf. this can be knitted\, woven\, or crocheted. it can be one whole garment or patch worked together.\n\nFeel free to bring anything you like to embellish the garment with – beads\, bells\, sparkle\, coloured fibre to add to the wool we will supply. The more decorated the better!\n\nHeckling (within reason)\, suggestions and encouragement are allowed\, there may very well be rosettes for a variety of categories. This is intended to be a fun\, busy and probably just a bit silly day!\nBring the tools of your chosen craft with you – spinning wheels\, carders\, looms already warped\, knitting needles\, crochet hooks\, scissors\, darning needles in case you want to work together to create your scarf in sections. Paper and pen for planning may be useful. All we will supply is your fleece – washed but uncarded so the rest is up to you and your team. \nTea\, coffee and cake will be supplied but please feel free to bring additional cake to help Diana out – we like cake! \nYou will also need to bring your own lunch and a chair please.

SUMMARY:April Meeting 2018
DESCRIPTION:Nalebinding talk plus have-a-go day\, with Pauline Shelley. \nPauline will give a short talk explaining what Nalebinding is and its history. She will explain how she discovered Nalebinding\, and what it is that attracted her to it. \nParticipants in the workshop will be able to have a go at the Finnish 2+2 stitch\, and the very ancient Coptic Tarim stitch\, which closely resembles stocking stitch. Participants will be able to start off\, then make a long single piece and join it to form a spiral. How to decrease and increase will also be taught\, just as with crochet. There will be needles to purchase at £5 each at the end of the day. All the wool will be provided. A fact sheet of information will be made available\, with contact groups and websites that will provide all the best tutorials for further support. \n \nPauline loves all crafts\, especially those that use natural fibres and particularly those with historical origins. She knits\, crochets\, sews\, spins and has done a bit of weaving. Currently she is making Tudor costumes for children to wear when they visit Sulgrave Manor. Pauline has a fascination for ancient crafts and ways of life; her dream is to live\, for a while\, in an Iron Age village!

SUMMARY:January Meeting 2018
DESCRIPTION:‘Threads of the Indus’ – a talk by Seher Mirza. \n\nThe creative process and the experience of making is personal to each of us; it generates meaning in different ways. This hybrid research project and social business initiative (S jo) explores the potential of creative agency through hand weave and needlework\, and the social relationship created between contemporary and traditional indigenous craft makers. The project works with three rural craft communities in Sindh\, Pakistan. The founder of the project and S jo\, Seher Mirza\, will discuss her journey with the main group of women that led to unique jewellery created from the collaboration of their design and craft skills. This small opportunity of creative expression steered the women’s confidence to transform aspects of their social lives.

SUMMARY:July Meeting 2017
DESCRIPTION:My Journey with Textiles \nwith Rod Owen. \nRod Owen will be visiting us to share his passion for Japanese and Peruvian textiles.  Rod is an absolute expert in this field\, having published a number of books\, with another in the offing. \nThere are now some exciting additions to the July meeting programme.  Firstly\, Rod will be demonstrating in the morning\, prior to his talk\, so do come along early to see braiding in practice.  Secondly\, he is bringing his co-author\, Terry Flynn\, along to join him for the demonstration and talk.  Terry hails from the USA; she creates garments and sculptures that combine her interest in weaving\, Andean and Japanese braiding\, and knitting.  Terry discovered a love of teaching while giving classes at the Weaver’s Place\, a shop she later owned from 1989–2000.  During this time\, she taught beginning and intermediate weaving\, and garment design.  Terry began studying takadai braids (flat braids made on the bias) with Rod in 1994.  She collaborated with Rod on various projects\, including proofing his pattern instructions and contributing some of her own to his book Making Kumihimo\, Japanese Interlaced Braids (2004).  Over the years\, Terry has taught weaving and braiding locally\, for various guilds\, and at regional and international conferences. \nI am sure an enthralling and fascinating day is guaranteed!
