SUMMARY:June Workshop 2026
DESCRIPTION:Flax workshop: Flaxland will cover the preparation and spinning of flax as well as its history. \nSimon and Ann have been growing flax for over 40 years and promoting traditional skills through education and workshops at their base in the Cotswolds for almost 20. They will kick off with a talk about their work and vision restoring flax to its place in UK production\, not just as a heritage crop but as a viable future contribution to the economy\, then move into a workshop using drop spindles or your own wheel. Flax spinning is not the same as wool spinning so whilst experienced spinners may have a head start\, the day is suitable for all including the most novice. \nThey will demonstrate the processing of flax from straw to fibre with participation available to those who wish it. There are plenty of small tools to learn on\, play with and\, if stocks allow\, buy. \nYou may bring your own flax if you’ve grown it but there will be lots of samples\, and materials such as hackled fibre to use at the workshop and enough drop spindles for all. Tamara will have her Ashford Tradional available on the day if anyone wants a go on a wheel but doesn’t wish to bring one. If you want to spend the whole time on a wheel though\, bring one. \nEveryone should end up with a wealth of new skills and some finished linen yarn/thread.

SUMMARY:September Workshop 2026
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: Indigo “Pay and Play” with guild members Helen Allen and Tamara Cartwright-Loebl. \nThe Indigo workshop is titled Pay and Play\, because participants can opt to pay for extra items to dye if they choose as it can be restrictive for some to only have a piece or two to work with\, particularly if new to the indigo vat! \nWe will supply tea towels/tote bags/silk scarves for participants. \nSetting up the vats will be first thing in the morning session\, we will work together with participants so they can experience this . We will look at simple folds/scrunching or tie techniques to prepare our fabric. \nIf the vat misbehaves\, we will look a little longer at problem solving techniques. Then we dye. \nBecause we will have limited numbers and copious coverings for surfaces this should be easy enough to supervise… If the weather is kind to us it would be lovely to be able to take our work outside and even set up a washing line to dry\, but we shall see. \nYou may want to bring waterproof gloves and apron\, but we shall not be splashing about. \nThe cost of the workshop includes one bag or towel\, plus extras on the day at £3 per item or £6 for a silk scarf.

DESCRIPTION:Introduction to prehistoric textiles with Sally Pointer. \nIn this workshop\, Sally will introduce us to the fibres and techniques employed by Stone Age and bronze age people in the British Isles and northern Europe. The day will include some history and archaeology and at least cordage making and braiding in different fibres\, making and using ancient tools from a variety of materials\, netting and simple looping\, but the day will be tailored to the interest of the participants\, so who knows where we’ll end up? If you’ve done this workshop with Sally before\, many happily do it again because there’s always something new (ironically for prehistory) each time. \nThere will be a passing mention of the existence of sprang but that really needs a say all to itself. As usual\, Sally will have many examples to display and both books and kits to buy. \nYou will end up with a lot of knowledge\, some finished items and some interesting new skills to practice.
