DESCRIPTION:Have-a-Go Day: Rigid Heddles – not just plain weave.  With Guild members Liz Mitchell and Angela Pawlyn.\n\n\nLiz will show you how to add string heddles to convert a rigid heddle loom to three or four shafts.\n\nAngela will show you how patterns can be woven on rigid heddle looms using pick up sticks or by distorting the weft. She will bring several looms (including three belonging to the Guild) for you to have a go on or you can experiment on your own loom.\n\nIf you have not woven before you can have a go with plain weave.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: An ‘Introduction’ to natural dye with Judy Hardman \nJudy is a long draw spinner and has been spinning\, weaving and dyeing for over thirty years. She’s an expert on Natural Dyeing creating a good range of colours using a variety of plants. Weld and dyers greenweed for yellows\, madder and cochineal for reds\, coreopsis for orange\, indigo for blue and a combination of these for green and purple. Logwood also gives purples and greens when over dyeing yellow.\n\nJudy uses flowers\, stems\, roots and skins in her natural dyeing technique.\n\nHer book Natural Dyes describes how to dye with plants that can be grown in the garden or collected from the countryside; it is lavishly and delightfully illustrated by RHS medalist\, Sally Pinhey with accurate and detailed botanical watercolours as well as photographs of yarn samples of the colours each plant produces. Judy’s book includes instructions on solar dyeing\, step by step guide to dyeing wool\, silk\, cotton and felt in all its forms and gives five different garden designs using dye plants.

DESCRIPTION:Beautiful Cloth – Saori Weaving with Amanda Edney. \nAmanda will be starting her talk at 11am. \nSAORI weaving is weaving with no rules or restrictions. Weavers express themselves with complete freedom and creativity. SAORI weaving is about self-expression rather than technique. There is no forward planning involved\, other than choosing the warp and yarns for the weft and then just weaving in the moment. \nAmanda is also bringing 2 of her Saori looms for members to try out Saori Weaving. This will give anyone who would like to try this creative\, free form style of weaving a chance to try it out and ask questions.

DESCRIPTION:Board of Trade Design Register – Dr Dinah Eastop \nThe Board of Trade Design Register is a huge collection of nearly 3 million designs and their registration records\, dating 1839-1991. \nDr Dinah Eastop has a background in textile conservation and material culture studies. She has been working on the multi-stranded BT Design Register project as a research fellow in the Collection Care department of The National Archives since November 2010.
